Commentary: This peer reviewed transcription of the signatures was prepared by Sam Forman, John Hannigan, Tamesin Eustis, Lora Innes, and Cassandra Berman with the active encouragement of Houghton’s archivist John overholt and Brandeis University’s Professor Jane Kamensky. The transcribed list was produced via invitation-only small crowd sourcing, with visual inspection performed from Houghton Library’s electronically posted images, spot checking with primary and secondary historical and genealogical sources, and final inspection of the source documents under a magnifying glass and with a trans-illuminator.  One of our group is on record as wanting to name a rock band “Hopestill Capen and the Eyeball Posse” after our rapid and successful exercise in internet-enabled crowd-sourcing.  Who said librarians do not have a sense of humor?

Controversial patriot Dr. Thomas Young and leading merchant John Rowe signed  the non-consumption agreement, as did James Otis and Dr. Joseph Warren on previous pages. The bigger stories about formerly anonymous Patriots, politically active women, and people who eventually became loyalists, are yet to be told.  Even artist John Singleton Copley signed. I anticipate that this list will be utilized to further understanding of group and individual agency in protests against the post-Stamp Act Townshend duties. Primary source documentation s from this time period can be sparse and fragmentary. 

Descriptive statistics for subscription pages 5 through 8 (of 8 sheets in total): 279 signatures.  Two of them recanted (one man, one woman).  Fifteen signatures on these pages are by women, of over 50 in total.  John Whatman’s fleur-de-lis watermark, signifying fine imported English paper, characterizes pages 6 and 8; his W countermark shows on pages 5 and 7.
